Teen Driver Safety
Driving is a complex activity - it involves putting together multifaceted evaluations, split-second decision making and performing intricate maneuvers. As Oct. 17-23 marks National Teen Driver Safety Week, itfs important for teen drivers to develop and maintain the proper attitude about driving. Remember - driving is a privilege, not a right. And, itfs important for parents/guardians to start an open dialogue with their teen about safe driving skills before they turn 16, set a good example and consider establishing a parent /teen driving contract. A sample of this contract and more safety tips for teens and parents are available at www.DriveSafePA.org.

Title I Program

Steel Valley School District receives federal funding through the Title I program enabling it to offer additional reading and math services to students in grades K-8. Students qualify for the program when they score "below basic" or "basic" on state approved assessments. Students who qualify for the program will receive a Title I School-Parent Compact that outlines what services the school will provide and how the parent and student will participate in the program. All Title I parents are encouraged to be active in the District's parent involvement program. Parents should attend all PTO meetings, parent/teacher events and Title I family activities. By being an active parent, you can provide your child with a positive outlook towards education.

Reminder:  All students in grades 7-12 are required to have 1 dose of tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis (Tdap) and 1 dose of meningitis vaccine (MCV4). Please contact your family physician or the Allegheny County Health Department at 412-578-8060.

ACCELERATED READER

At Park Elementary

The new Accelerated Reader Program is web based. This gives us the advantage of offering quizzes that could never have been previously purchased. Our students now can select from over 103,000 quizzes in both fiction and nonfiction books. Due to this high volume of quizzes offered we can no longer list the titles on our Steel Valley Web site.

We now can offer the Accelerated Reader web site to find if a title is an AR selection. In doing so the user can find the reading levels, points possible, a summary and often a graphic of the book cover.

There is a general search by title and even advanced searches by keyword, subject and author.

Click here for Accelerated Reader: http://www.arbookfind.com

The Accelerated Reader program also offers quizzes on titles from our reading series. These are listed for the students under “Other Reading” and are linked to their grade level.

Star Reading is an assessment tool offered by Accelerated Reader that helps in discovering the reading level range for a student. These tests help the teacher target instruction strategies, provide students with the most appropriate instructional materials and help intervene when necessary. It is called STAR Reading. This is a part of the Accelerated Reader program. The tests are adapted, being tailored to each student’s ability allowing for a test that is efficient, accurate and motivational.
